24 July – World Day for Grandparents and the elderly – In July, Pope Francis invites us to pray with him for the elderly:
” We pray for the elderly, who represent the roots and memory of a people; may their experience and wisdom help young people to look towards the future with hope and responsibility.”
In the light of this intention of Pope Francis, who has spoken on several occasions about grandparents, their richness and wisdom, we present a list of films in which grandparents play an important role in history:
- Finding Forrester (Gus van Sant, EUA, 2000, 136 min.)
- Minimal stories(Carlos Sorín, Argentina, 2002, 94 min.)
- In the Heights (Jon M. Chu, E.U., 2021, 143 min.)
- The mole agent(Maite Alberdi, Chile, 2020, 90 min.)
- Coco(Lee Unkrich, Adrián Molina, E.U., 2017; 109 min.)
- Le Havre (Aki Kaurismäki, Finland, 2011, 93 min.)
- The Way Home (Lee Jeong Hyang, South Korea, 2002, 85 min)
Watching these films can be an opportunity for reflection. In addition, the video can be a valuable tool, especially for EYM youth, for disseminating an important but sometimes neglected theme: the richness that an elderly person can bring with his or her testimony of life.
